Is Pilates Helpful for Multiple Sclerosis?

Updated: Nov 25, 2021

Multiple Sclerosis is an autoimmune disorder affecting the central nervous system. This is a chronic disease where damage occurs to the myelin sheath encasing nerve fibers. This can disrupt coordination, motor skills, speech and sometimes vision.

Treatment of this condition involves a multi-pronged approach, and it is agreed that exercise is vital to managing MS. Because multiple sclerosis can manifest differently on different days, the Pilates studio provides a flexible setting where exercises can be easily adjusted to address fluctuating symptoms.

Pilates Studio for MS Multiple Sclerosis

We have had a number of clients with MS in our studio. With consistent exercise, they see a notable reduction in their pain. Even on a "bad day" we can still do a good workout and adjust to avoid any problem areas.

We target balance and coordination using both the larger machines and the smaller pieces of Pilates equipment. Wobble boards, balls and other balance aids add an extra dimension to the work. This too helps to abate the multifaceted symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis.
